Coxsone Dodd Dies at 72

Just a few weeks after the queen of rocksteady, Phyllis Dillon, died, the great Jamaican producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, founder of Studio One Records died yesterday at the age of 72 at his home in Jamaica. In less than a month, Jamaican music has lost two of its most important pioneers. Damn. via http://actionpotential.blogspot.com/, Wednesday, May 05, 2004

Following Ivan Smagghe’s superb ‘Death Disco’ mix extravaganza, those purveyors of quality dance music at Eskimo give us a taste of the windy city via Amsterdam’s Paradiso club. Chicago Boogie is exactly that, a sweaty romp through some of the most seminal cuts in house and acid house music’s formative years and a healthy nod to the party spirit that helped put Chicago and House music on the map. Compiled by Amsterdam based Antal and All Out K (both founders of Holland’s highly regarded Rush Hour distribution) this CD also provides an insight into their six year running ‘Paradisco 3000’ monthly residency at the Paradiso club. From the bonafide classics of Virgo’s ‘Ride’, Mr. Fingers ‘I’m Strong’ and Adonis ‘We’re Rocking Down The House’ to the acid house underground anthems ‘Computer Madness’ by Steve Poindexter and Six Brown Bros ‘Battery Acid’, Chicago Boogie is a carefully crafted mix of what dance music is all about.

Culture Club vol.2 (2004) - Glimmer Twins and TLP

Once again Ghent based Culture Club comes up trumps with their second outing… re-utilizing the perfect combination as for the first volume: 1 shiny disc compiled & mixed by the Glimmer Twins, who now are on full throttle, blending the old & the new, the light & the dark into a mindblowing mix of epic proportions… Which makes them one of the hottest dj duo’s around!!!!! Same as in the club, TLP gets the second slot, but as always he delivers the goods big time, with his own approach he melts the latest r&b anthems with old school funk/disco<:A> tunes over house / soca beats while never forgetting his fascination for ragga & rootsmuzik… Welcome to the ultimate party CD, definitely will be in an endless loop on many car/bar stereos over the summer…--http://www.news.be [Jun 2004]

Louden Up Now (2004) - !!!

Louden Up Now (2004) - !!! [Amazon.com] [FR] [DE] [UK]

There's been a buzz about !!! Chk Chk Chk for a while now and thankfully their debut full-length album, Louden Up Now, doesn't disappoint. Like Electric 6 promised with "Danger! High Voltage" or to some extent the Scissor Sisters, their style is somewhere between dance music, guitar-rock and disco. All of the songs here have a sturdy rhythm section of drums, bass and choppy guitar with everything else given free reign to go off and be progressive. The vocals are loud and edgy with more than a hint of wryness in the lyrics. On "Pardon My Freedom", a foul-mouth rant about freedom of speech (or possibly Tourette's Syndrome), he quips "tell the Christians I'm taller than Jesus" whereas "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard" likens the former mayor of New York to the dance-hating preacher from the film Footloose (complete with quotes from the title song).

Louden Up Now is very accessible while remaining excitingly different and packed with surprises. The band amply demonstrate a "karazzee" sense of humour and irreverence to music yet never fall foul to the trap of becoming a gimmick or novelty act. --David Trueman, amazon.co.uk

Calling Out of Context (2004) - Arthur Russell

Calling Out of Context (2004) - Arthur Russell [Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]

Maybe it's the millennium, or that dreaded post-modernism those "Late Show" types witter on about in the small hours, but in the last two decades music has been looking back to the past for it's inspiration, especially to music that perhaps didn't get the recognition it deserved first time around. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the ever changing world of dance music. Whether it's Hip-Hop, it's face pointed reverentially to the Old School, or House stealing Disco riffs by the truck load, people are increasingly intrigued by back-in-the-day. And common to both the aforementioned scenes and much more is one person - Arthur Russell, a man some regard as the best songwriter of the 20th century. --Chris Menist, Faith Magazine via http://www.djfriendly.co.uk/more_arthur.php [Aug 2004] This is the second release in 2004 to celebrate the legacy of Arthur Russell. Released on Audika Records:

More on Audika:

Steve Knutson, formerly of Tommy Boy and currently of Audika, has been kind enough to put in a word with Soul Jazz about our compilation, New York City Body Music, Volume One, which we hope to have out somewhere, before too long. Audika will be reissuing Arthur Russell's World of Echo next year, possibly with DVD element. How fucking gangsta is that?

He/Audika will also be releasing Calling Out Of Context, a "complete album of previously unreleased rhythmic/song material" by Russell. Double boner! --Sasha Frere-Jones http://sfj.abstractdynamics.org/archives/000645.html

The first in Audika's new series of reissues and collections featuring the work of New York-based cellist, songwriter, composer, and disco visionary, the late ARTHUR RUSSELL (co-founder of Sleeping Bag Records). Calling Out Of Context features twelve previously unreleased tracks that push the boundaries of pop and underground disco recorded during Russell's prime years 1985-'90. The material is drawn from Corn, an album completed in 1985 but never released, and an abandoned album recorded for Rough Trade as Russell had become ill. Spontaneous, challenging, and contemporary. "If Nick Drake had lived long enough to make records with New Order, they might have sounded like this."--Rolling Stone --Midheaven Mailorder, Feb 2004

December 2003's Wire Magazine has an extensive article on Arthur Russell by David Toop, the writer ever to interview Arthur Russell and one of the first to point out his exceptional qualities. The original plan was to release this CD on this compilation on Nuphonic, but Soul Jazz records picked up the project after Nuphonic went defunct. There is another release by Arthur Russell on Audika records. [http://www.audikarecords.com/]

Former U.S. Air Force serviceman & stand up comedian Kenny Larkin is one of the chief innovators of Detroits so called "second wave" of techno producers. He began his music career in 1990 after hanging out at local Detroit clubs like The Music Institute and The Shelter, he soon hooked up with Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva, and started to record for their Plus 8 label, releasing the early classic "We Shall Overcome."

The Narcissist is Kennys debut for Peacefrog, and his first album in well over 6 years. It contains 11 tracks of some of the most soulful, melodic, & emotive music youll ever hear, with every track a future classic; from the breathtakingly warm & romantic "My Reflection", and the heart stopping Carl Craigesque Detroit sounds cape "Mono e Mono", to the eloquent freestyle jazz meanderings of "A Part Of Me" and "Nitefall". This is some of the finest electronic soul music, packed full of human feeling and warmth.--amazon.com

The Story of Konk (2004) - Konk

The Story of Konk (2004) - Konk [Amazon US] [FR] [DE] [UK]

KONK were first featured on Soul Jazz Records earlier New York Noise alongside Arthur Russell, ESG and Liquid Liquid.

KONK were formed in New York in 1980. They played an important part in the link between New Yorks Disco scene (Paradise Garage/Loft/Gallery etc) and the New York No Wave/Post-Punk scene (Liquid Liquid, ESG, James White etc).

KONKs pioneering interest in electronic and musical technology also put them at the forefront of the burgeoning worlds of Electro/Hip-Hop and House. Their use of DJ mixers (breaking down a track to its individual elements) predated the arrival of samplers and enabled DJs such as Larry Levan to extend their mixes to up to 25 minutes! At the same time KONK would just as likely find themselves on a Bronx mix-tape alongside Bambaatas "Planet Rock" and Mantronix "Put the Needle to the Groove" with Break-dancing and Body-popping being a regular feature at their live gigs (check out the live version of "Baby Dee").

This compilation brings together the classic KONK recordings in the 1980s from their releases on labels as diverse as Rough Trade, Sleeping Bag, 99 Records, Les Disques Du Crepuscle and Celluloid. As well as being a key group in New Yorks Post-Punk dance scene where they regularly played alongside groups such as Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, ESG, The Peech Boys and The Lounge Lizards, KONK found favour with DJs such as David Mancuso and the legendary Larry Levan and were one of a select few bands to play at both the Paradise Garage and the Loft.

KONK featured in its line up members of Jean Michel Basquiats band Gray, Sonic Youth and members of Glenn Brancas ensemble. Founding member Dana Vlcek later went on to work with Francois Kervorkian. The wide range of its members is reflected in the music which fuses Disco/Post-Punk/Electro/Latin and proto-House together.

This new compilation makes available KONKs left-field Disco classics (many for the first time in twenty years!). The album also comes with extensive sleeve notes, interviews and photographs.

If I gave you a party (Syrup version) - Sexual Harassment 11. Exterior Street (Protein version) - Death Comet Crew & Rammellzee 12. NCR (Funkstorung version) - Ike Yard

A definitive compilation of NY post-punk centred round the infamous Mudd Club, incorporating the dance ethic of disco and reggae, the newly-emerging voice of hiphop, and the experimentalism of rudimentary synths: the first real melting pot world music. The seven original tracks from 1978-82 sound like they could easily have been made yesterday, and the five remixes don't mess around too much with the originals. Can't recommend this too highly if you love raw, vital dance music. grantc via amazon.com

Its easy to forget that despite todays re-imagining of that era, disco and punk were sworn enemies, with the Mudd Club and its progeny structuring themselves as a response to the 9-5 Weekender attitude of the disco crowd. Were soon to be treated to the first bonafide history of the era at the hands of New York-based Academic Simon Reynolds' eagerly anticipated Post-Punk book. None of the disco people went to The Mudd Club. You got the Bianca Jaggers thrown in once in a while, but if we saw those people we'd trip 'em up, kick 'em, and if they came dressed all disco James Chance might just mug them on the dancefloor. The strata of people was pretty pronounced. When you say Disco people I think Studio 54 people, that was a whole tribe of people. More power to them, but it jusn't wasn't our scene. With Dominatrix he was trying to engineer transgression, not homogeneity: Its good to have boundaries because then you can say this and this get together, and it's not just a pool of musicians. This boundary breaking was echoed in the tracks' subject matter. I'd been hanging out with Dominatrixes, they were my good friends. I wanted to do a thing which showed what they were aboutthese women in power who were beating and peeing on the top music business lawyers in New York. Stuart [Argabright] clearly in awe of these girls and the down-up inversion of power they practised. --Woebot, March 22, 2004 http://www.woebot.com/movabletype/archives/000452.html [May 2004]

Stuart Argabright is a Producer and Director who has been working in music and multimedia in NYC since 1978. In 2003 into 2004, he is able to experience a bit of the past, present and future simultaneously with his 1980's groups getting their Rerelease and new life while he continues working on new music with Dystopians and Dominatrix (now a major Rerelease on Gigolo Records) and Producing Artists like The Rammellzee's "Bi Conicals Of The Rammellzee" Album for the Munich indie Gomma and remixing up and comers like Tussle (SF) for Tmu.In addition, Stuart has been working in Music Video, and with Artists such as Gretchen Bender, Robert Longo, Bill T Jones, and author William Gibson, including the 1994 "Neuromancer" Audio Book and "Hip Tech High Lit" in 1987 with Judy Nylon and Sean Young. The enigmatic Kenny Dixon Junior, aka Moodymann, is one of the Detroit sounds leading architects. Black Mahogani is the definitive Moodymann album, featuring the rarest & most sought after tracks from his early KDJ outings as well as some incredible new future classics.

The album features Amp Fiddler on vocals for "Im Doing Fine", which is arguably Amps finest moment. Also featured are two Detroit jazz & soul legends; Norma Jean Bell and Roberta Sweed.

The pure soulful genius of this album will give it a more universal appeal than just Moodymanns usual fans and should bring in an audience from a wide variety of genres including jazz, soul and R&B.

Anatomie de l'Enfer/Anatomy of Hell (2004) - Catherine Breillat

Anatomie de l'enfer/Anatomy of Hell) (2004) - Catherine Breillat

With her characteristically unflinching gaze and courage, Breillat takes her exploration of sexuality, desire and the relationship between men and women to the limit. A pure, painterly, often surreal study in sex and the body.

He doesn't like women. She will pay him to look at her, as she says, 'from the angle from which she should never be viewed'. It will cost you, he says. She says: I'll pay you. So begins Anatomie de l'enfer, based on Breillat's own novel Pornocratie. Following this post-night club encounter, the film moves to its sole location: a house in the middle of nowhere, perched on the cliffs. Over four nights, the man makes his way to this sparsely decorated house to meet this beautiful woman. If the nature of their encounter would seem to follow the formula of an erotic film, Breillat takes us far beyond such a mundane premise, as one would expect from a film maker who over ten films has explored, often with searing intensity and a relentless gaze, the relationship between men and women and the nature of female desire. While the spare interiors, the careful arrangement and framing of these bodies in space, and the enormously delicate photography make this perhaps Breillat's most composed, painterly film, Anatomie de l'enfer also takes us to the end of the road that began so directly with her first film. `This time I have decided to see it through to the end. I have decided that I couldn't go any further, that the Xth would be the conclusion of a decalogue. The X of X-rated film.' Catherine Breillat once again proves herself to be one of the most risk-taking and challenging of contemporary directors. --http://www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com/en/film/26340.html

Express Way (2004) - Troublemakers

Express Way (2004) - Troublemakers [Amazon.com] [FR] [DE] [UK]

Coming from the land of fine wine and romance is the electronica trio Troublemakers, and like their French counterparts such as AIR and Dimitri From Paris, this eclectic group of musicians composes a selective sound when it comes to defining dance music. DJ Oil, Fred Berthet, and Arnaud Taillefer first met at the Friche-Belle in Marseille in 1998, and quickly the three got along, thanks to their appreciation for '60s and '70s jazz and funk and film scores. This in turn created the basis of jungle, hip-hop, and house elements to fuse together for the Troublemakers. Each musician has individual experiences as well: DJ Oil, a mainstay within the jungle scene in Marseille, has been perfecting his funkadelic grooves since the early '90s and has held a residency at the famed Radio Grenouille since 1996. Taillefer preferred photography, graphic design, and movie soundtracks, aside from tackling music full-time, and Berthet, who is a Parisian DJ, issued several releases during the '90s while working with worldbeat music. Together the Troublemakers mold a unique vibe and maintain a loyal fan base around Europe. In early 2001, their debut Doubts & Convictions was released on Guidance. --MacKenzie Wilson, Allmusic.com
